「後ろに引っ張る」が原義。感情や進行を前に出さないよう物理的・心理的に引き止めるイメージです。
使われ方
hold back one's tears
涙をこらえる（感情が外に漏れ出さないよう、内側に押しとどめる場面で使います。）
hold back information
情報を隠す（相手に伝えるべき事実を、あえて言わずに手元に留めておく際に用います。）
hold back from doing
～するのをためらう（行動を起こそうとする気持ちを、自ら引き止めて一歩踏み出せない状態です。）
類義語との違い
- restrain: hold backが感情を抑えるのに対し、restrainは力ずくで動きを封じ込める、あるいは理性的・法的に行動を制限するという強い強制力を伴います。
- conceal: hold backが「出さないように留める」のに対し、concealは「見えないように覆い隠す」という、意図的な隠蔽や秘密保持に重点があります。
